"INTENSE is the word for ENDER'S GAME." - The New York Times
"In all the world, the name of Ender is one to conjure with. The child-god, the miracle worker, with life and death in his hands." - Ender's Game pg. 307
Summary
Andrew Wiggin, a.k.a. Ender, is a child genius. He lives in the time of the Buggers. The Buggers are an alien race who have attacked Earth twice. Children are recruited to be trained to fight if and when the Buggers attack again. Every child is first tested to see if they are smart enough. Then a monitor is placed on the back of their necks if they pass. This monitor allows the people recruiting to watch the children, see what they are seeing, and feel their feelings. This further helps the military to see if they have the right stuff. Both of Ender's siblings were tested. They passed the intelligence tests but lacked in one thing. Valentine, Ender's sister, was too nice. Peter, Ender's brother, was too mean. Ender was the third child in the family. This was very odd at the time because families were only allowed two children. The government allowed it because they wanted to see if they could get a child who was a mix between Valentine and Peter. Nice, but not too nice, and mean, but not too mean. Turns out Ender was it. He got recruited to battle school.
Battle school is a school stationed in space to train child geniuses to become soldiers and commanders. They had normal classes like other kids but had other classes like military tactics or military history. The classes were not the only thing the kids did. The battleroom was the only thing most kids cared about at battleschool. The battleroom is a room with no gravity where kids held battles between different "armies" to help practice combat and to practice either commanding or following commands. The battleroom was not a little thing though. The battleroom was really what the teachers looked at to find kids who were the right material to lead the real army in battle.
Ender arrives at battleschool and in a very little time gets sent into an army. He was the youngest in any army in battle school. His commander despised him and wouldnt let him fire his gun when every they had battles in the battleroom. Ender decided to save his army a defeat one game and his commander did not like it at all. His commander, Bonzo, took it as a shot at his honor. This set into action a hate which would never leave Bonzo. Ender was then transferred to a different army. He is a very big part of the new army and stays at the top of the standings in the battleroom.
Back on Earth Ender's brother and sister are secretly becoming active in the political world under the names of Locke and Demosthenes. They slowly but surely become trusted and followed by other people. People either like Locke or Demosthenes. They become the most recognized people in the world, and yet no one actually knows they are just kids. They insert different columns on subjects and are even hired to write articles for different websites. Peter plans to become so popular that when the war is over he can come into power because people will respect him so much they won't care that he is just a kid.
Back in battle school Ender is being advanced at an alarming rate. He soon inherits his own army full of very unexperienced kids. He trains them well and they become the best army in the history of battle school. They are soon challenged when the teachers start ruining the game and making it unfair to Ender's army. This makes no difference, he still wins. Not long after he is brought back to Earth before he is sent to Command school. He is the youngest ever to go to command school. He is 12 when most kids don't exit battle school till they are at least 16. After resting on Earth he goes to command school to be trained to fight the Buggers. He finds out he is to be commander of the forces sent out at the end of the last battle, nearly 50 years ago, heading for the Buggers home planet. This is where i will stop. I don't want to ruin the ending for anyone who reads this wiki. So read Ender's Game to find out, and believe me you won't be sorry. Ender's Game is an amazing book.
Why is this book outstanding?
Ender's Game is a book full of action, betrayal, hardship, but most of all, emotion. There is almost any emotion you could think of in this book. It will make you feel the emotions the characters are feeling because you will get so into the story. This is one of the best if not THE best stories i have ever read. I got so into the story I would check what page I'm on and I would be fifty pages from when I last looked. I have heard from other people though, that they didnt like this book. I seriously couldnt believe it. So im guessing it is just the type of book that you will either love or hate.
This book is outstanding because of many things. First because it is so descriptive. Card uses so much description you can literaly picture exactly what is going on in your head. You can see the story play out like a movie. The second reason is because of the story itself. The story itself is a very weird concept but yet it sort of hits home because it has to do with things we can all relate to. Such as happiness, sadness, anger, or belonging. The third reason is because the story really captures you. No matter what age you are you really can just get caught in the story. Card meant this book to be for adults but kids really like it because the main character, Ender, is a child himself. This book just reels you in and makes you want to keep reading. The final reason is because this book really is just OUTSTANDING! I really can't explain it. I just can't really put how I feel about this book into words. It it so good there isn't even a word to describe it. Awesome, fantastic, gnarly, or even supercalafradgalisticexpealidocious can't really explain what I want to say.
